Cold day in Chicago, stepping across the street.  In this pic, it's Arthur, we think! Maybe also Bea?

The Old Town Ale House is just off the busy intersection of North Avenue and Wells Street in Chicago's Old Town community. It's a few blocks walk from North Avenue Beach and gorgeous, lush Lincoln Park, just south of Lincoln Park Zoo. It's across the street from Piper's Alley, just around the corner from legendary Second City and Zanies Comedy Club and down the street from the Red Orchid Theater.

The neighborhood features several restaurants from Chinese to Mexican, from fast food and soup-and-sandwich, to family lunch and dinner, and fine dining. There are theaters, shops for clothes, shoes, gifts, plants; groceries, nail salons, pet stores, a 24/7 drug store, banks and ATMs up the wazoo. Just for location alone, the Ale House is a great spot to relax.

This is a laid back watering hole, the likes of which you don't see much in Chicago anymore. The neighborhood is gentrified. The Ale House is anything but. They don't serve food, just bar snacks. But there are plenty of places nearby where you can buy sandwiches and stuff and you are welcome to eat here. You can even order a delivery!

Time Out Readers name Old Town Ale House Chicago's Best Dive Bar, 2007 Eat Out Awards

"The visage of Cheers barfly George Wendt, painted by Bruce Elliott, most certainly authenticates this spot, your pick for Chicago best dive. Wendt is in good company: Images of former regulars Bill Murray and  Eddie Balchowski, a heroin addict who was a concert pianist until he lost an arm in the Spanish Civil War, also stand guard over 36 years of dust and kitsch. Meanwhile, the “Old Town Ale House Book Sharing Library,” a collection of pulp and pop fiction, proves once and for all that drinking and reading do mix."
